May 23, 2014
When it comes to showing the world that an energy leader can also lead in being friendly to the environment, Houston is at the front of the line. According to a recent article from the Houston Chronicle, the EPA has announced that this city uses more renewable energy than any other city in the nation, and is on the top 10 lists for the organizations who are most supportive of renewable energy use.
48 percent of the energy used to power the City of Houston's more than 300 public buildings comes from renewable sources, the article explained, placing it 9th on the list of green energy users. The city's director of the office of sustainability, Laura Spanjian, stated that Houston has been relying on an increasing amount of renewable energy and that the mayor feels that it is very important that greenhouse gas emissions be cut and that Houston set a good example for its citizens. The plan is to show how a city can have a strong economy and also work on its emissions goals, Spanjian said.
